3ft Antique Victorian Matched Pair of All Brass Bedsteads – Ref. 6361A36PR
£10,000.00
Stunning, highly ornate matched pair of cast brass bedsteads by Peyton & Peyton. For anyone wishing to recreate the majesty and importance of a highly appointed Victorian bedroom, these bedsteads could quite easily be the best of their genre and style available today. Quite beautifully delicate and intricate in their aesthetic, they would have been handcrafted by the very elite of Peyton’s workforce for the wealthiest Victorians of their day.
Product Description
Main features of note are the wonderful symmetry of the serpentine, cathedral arched gates, ones featuring classic hockey sticks to the lower footboards. When made up with bedding and a well-executed drapery scheme, they will simply be world-class in the authenticity, character, and history they are able to bring to one’s bedroom scheme. Still standing in the most superb original condition adds greatly to these bedsteads’ overall appeal. The golden treacle color to the brass comes courtesy of the Victorians’ Lumanoid lacquered finish; one that utilized a sepia-colored lacquer.
This toned lacquer effect helped tie the different colors of brass mounts to one uniform tone. The brass mounts would have varied in color due to the differing processes used to make them. Some were spun from brass discs, some turned from solid, and others fittings cast and then cleaned up via a lathe. The smaller tubes have sheet brass foil rolled onto them, and the main posts are solid wall extruded brass. As such, and due to the differing metallurgy of the brasses used to create them, once polished they varied in the tone of their brass color, thus the sepia lacquer masked this. It also made allowance for the fact that slower Victorian polishing wheel speeds could not achieve such a high shine as the electrically powered ones we use today. Again, this lower shine was improved by the darker-colored, but still clear, Lumanoid lacquer.
These bedsteads’ makers, Edward and Richard Peyton, were both friends and peers of Robert Winfield. Courtesy of Winfield’s generous nature, much of Peyton’s product capability matched his firm’s mastery in cast brass detail and ormolu finish. The Peytons, however, plowed their own furrow structurally and an example of this is these bedsteads have unique lead-filled joints, exclusive to their firm. Made circa 1850, restoration work will be light and subtle; thus very much to these bedsteads’ best commercial interest.
Finish / Finishes:
All Brass Mounts: This bedstead will have a deep clean and we do not plan to re-polish it due to its wonderfully, mellow ‘treacle lustre’ which comes courtesy of an original Victorian polished and lacquered finish. This tone and colour cannot be achieved today and is facilitated only by a combination of the passage of time and the superlative workmanship of our Victorian forebear’s
Lumanoid brass lacquering process.
All Iron Work (side iron etc): The original paint of the side irons, cross irons and post chills will be deep cleaned, revived and waxed
courtesy of Bed Bazaar’s exclusive workshop methodology and skill set.

Mattresses & bedstead Bases:
The images shown here of bedsteads ref: 6361A36PR do not show them complete with bedstead bases and mattresses. However we would recommend a combined mattress and bedstead height of 30cm (12”). All brass bedsteads of this statue could accommodate a deeper mattress and base height but not one that exceeds 37.5cm (15”). One should be mindful that making a bedstead’s overall mattress height either too high or too low can impact the aesthetic integrity of the overall scheme one is seeking to create. As such we recommend speaking to one of our highly experienced team for further advice on our own Suffolk Journeyman range of mattresses and bedsteads bases.
