5ft Victorian Brass Bedstead – Ref. 96015A60
£6,500.00
A simply stunning example of the Victorian bedstead manufacturers art. Main features include, but are not limited to, extremely unusual tapered and fluted footboard posts. These are mounted with gilded acanthas leaf collars and uniquely styled cast brass top knobs. Both main gates culminate in a top feature of the most intricately cast floral displays in the style of James Adam’s ‘Swags and Bows’
This, a most elegant and finest of designs, would have been intricately drafted by the factory drawing office before entering production. From there team after team of traditional Birmingham trades men and women would have been tasked to fashion and create this bedstead using there process’s, in which they all would have held the rank of master craftsman. From heavy iron foundry for its side irons and chills to the most intricate pattern making and lost-wax casting processes, courtesy of their never waving application to there task, the fit and finish of this bedstead is something quite incredible to behold.
Product Description
If being quite stunning were not enough, this bedstead is standing in the most superb original condition and can modestly be described as being of museum quality and in museum or collector condition. Elegant and overtly ornate, the superbly preserved brass finish comes courtesy of the Victorian’s Lumanoid lacquered finish; one that utilised a sepia coloured lacquer.
This dark lacquer effect helped tie the different colours of brass mounts to one uniform tone. The brass mounts would have varied in colour due to the differing processes used to make them. Some were spun from discs, on this bedsteads all were casts from molten brass and by contrast the round tubes were a wrapping of sheet brass which was rolled over steel tubes. As such, and due to the differing Metallurgy of the brasses used to create them, once polished they varied in the tone of their brass colour and the sepia lacquer masked this. It also made allowance for the fact that slower Victorian polishing wheel speeds could not achieve such a high shine as the electrically powered ones we use today. Again, this lower shine was improved by the darker coloured, but still clear, Lumanoid lacquer. Quick Ship Programme
